AN ABIDING ANOINTING
“The anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you and ye need not that
any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is
truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him. “(I
John 2:27)
There are three different words used in The Word for anointing. The Hebrew word
‘suk’ means: to pour on. It speaks of how the oil runs down over the surface,
excites the senses, but is quickly dissipated, as with Israel, when we read, “I
anointed thee with oil,” (Ezek. 16:9), but it didn’t last, a momentary
fragrance, sweet perfume, but they soon lost its glory and feeling and turned
again to other gods.
David was anointed by Samuel, and this was followed by all his wilderness
training. It was to sustain him for the path he would be walking out in
preparation for the kingship to come.
Next, the Hebrew word ‘mashach’ meaning: to smear. Now it doesn’t run right off
again, nor is it lost with a little shaking, for it is smeared on and clings to
the being. When David was anointed the second time, he was made king over Judah,
but this was neither fullness nor perfection, for he said, “I am this day weak,
though anointed king,” (2 Samual.3:39). There was more power than before, kingly
authority was manifested in part, but he had not yet arrived.
In his third anointing, (2 Sam. 5:3), David became king over all Israel. But
between his second and third anointing, we read, “There was a long war between
the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger,
and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker,” (2 Sam. 3:1).
The Greek gives us our third word for anointing, it is ‘chrisma’ and means: TO
RUB IN. Here is an anointing that penetrates to inmost core, so that it totally
changes the inner nature. It will not run off, nor be rubbed off, because being
RUBBED IN, it becomes a part of the inner being. Yes, it abides and changes the
inner being, we become spirit of His Spirit, “Joined unto the Lord in one
spirit.” (I Cor. 6:17).
Praise God!
