GIVING GLORY TO GOD
“Give unto the Lord, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and
strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name.”
(I Chronicles 16:28-29)
It is characteristic of the spirit of this age, for men to seek their own glory,
and Jesus expressed this very clearly, when He said, “he that speaketh of
himself seeketh his own glory,” (John 7:18). But while it is a mark of the world
to seek for self-glory, it is equally a special feature of God’s remnant that
they be stripped of the glory of the flesh, and find their glory in Christ, as
it is written, “he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord,” (I Corinthians
1:31).
As the transition is made, from seeking our own glory, to begin seeking Christ,
and His righteousness, then it is that we also desire to bring glory to His
name. Yet, how does one give glory to God?
“And Joshua said unto Achan, my son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of
Israel, and make confession unto Him,” (Joshua 7:19). Herein is the beginning of
our giving glory to God, when we come to the point we are willing to confess our
guilt and sin, and in true repentance seek His forgiveness. This exalts Him to
the place of being our Saviour, and magnifies His grace. There are those who
“repent not to give Him the glory”, (Revelations 16:9). But out of a sincere
confession to Him, is a giving glory to God.
“Give glory to the Lord your God…say unto the king and to the queen, humble
yourselves,” (Jeremiah 13:16,18). To walk a path of humility is also to give
glory to God. “Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne,” and when
the people exalted him, “the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not
God the glory”, (Acts 12:21-23).
“Give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name; worship the Lord in the beauty
of holiness,” (Psalm 29:2). The Hebrew word for ‘worship’ means: to bow self
down. Self-abasement is more than a physical posture; it is an attitude of the
heart, as we come before Him to offer our worship and praise. “Let them give
glory unto the Lord, and declare His praise in the islands,” (Isaiah 42:12).
