GOD’S STRONG ONES
“Be strong – not in yourselves but in the Lord, in the power of His boundless
resource.” (Ephesians 6:10, Phillips)
“Strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man.” (Eph. 3:16)
The words of David, “I was reduced to nothingness and unknowing”, as one
paraphrased Psalm 73:22, speaks of the weakness of the flesh and natural. God
strips away the self-reliance which once was our strong defense, so that we
learn to trust solely in His boundless resource, to be endued with power by His
Spirit.
Paul spoke of a time, when “no man stood with me, but all forsook me: -
“notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me,” (II Timothy
4:16-17). This word ‘strengthened’ in the Greek is ‘endunamoo’ meaning: ‘TO MAKE
POWERFUL INWARDLY’. How shall we become powerful inwardly if we insist on
drawing all our strength from outward props and human resources? He must become
our strength. The promise is – “ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath
said, I will dwell in them…”(II Cor. 6:16). It is HIS INDWELLING that provides
our sufficiency.
“If thy strength becomes, as it were, pressed together and bowed down by the
difficulty, just when it ought to show itself, then it is limited. Thou art a
weakling,” (Prov. 24:10, Delitzsch trans.). Suffice it to say in this regard,
the STRONG ONES whom God is bringing forth shall not collapse in the midst of
the battle. They are being equipped to face the impossible, and prevail – for
“with God nothing is impossible”. Therefore, “the people that do know their God
shall be strong, and do exploits”, (Dan. 11:32).
The prophet Joel foresaw the coming of such a people, and described them as “a
great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be
any more after it, even to the year of many generations,” (Joel 2:2). Yes, the
Lord shall have His strong ones, those who are emptied of all carnal strength,
that they might be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Truly,
“the way of the Lord is strength to the upright”, (Proverbs 10:29).
