HIGHWAYS IN MY HEART
“Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways.”
Psalm 84:5
There are those, perhaps, who would aspire to go to Zion, but if they are
trusting in their own strength, they will go stumbling and struggling through
their natural life, and still find that they have “come short of the glory of
God”. But how blessed is the man who learns that his strength is in the Lord,
and by His grace alone shall we obtain the victory.
Moffatt gives an unusual rendering for this verse, “Happy are they who, NERVED
BY THEE, set out on pilgrimage”. When all the world finds that their nerves are
tense and frayed, here is a company that remains calm, cool and collected, for
God has imparted to them that needed constitutional vigor, energy and confident
assurance. Without this inworking of divine grace no one could keep up the pace
required for this hour. But because of HIM, we can say with Paul, “I have
strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me – I am ready for anything and
equal to anything through Him who infuses inner strength into me, that is, I am
self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency,” (Philippians 4:13).
With our strength IN CHRIST, we notice the next statement, “in whose heart are
the way”. Young’s Literal expands this to read, “highways are in their heart”.
Who? O, who is able to say this? Certainly not the carnal religious man who
seeks for someone to lead him by the hand, and depends on religious ceremony and
ritual to mark out some course and standard. Nor can it be said by those who
lean on “personal prophesies” from others to give them guidance. This is
speaking of those in whom His anointing abides. “Ye need not that any man teach
you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is
no lie, even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him,” (I John 2:27).
To walk by the Voice within, “Christ in you”, knowing that He will guide through
each day, the Highway is in your heart, and you will not go astray.
