APRIL 26
THE LORD, OUR CONFIDENCE
“Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it
cometh. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being
taken.” (Proverbs 3:25-26)
It is in a daily walking with God, in a positive now, rejoicing in His goodness,
endeavoring to be led by His Spirit, that we find ourselves prepared for
whatever the morrow brings. The inworking is HIS, and while we might feel very
insufficient in ourselves, at the appointed moment His grace is there, not only
to sustain, but to bring us through triumphantly.
When the Lord is our confidence, we need not fear, nor shall our foot be taken.
It is interesting to note the particular Hebrew word for “confidence”, being
“kesel” and meaning firmness, stoutness. Thank God, He does become all of this
for us, and in us. The same word is also translated as HOPE, when it speaks of
the Lord being our hope, and thus the anchor of our soul. Yet, almost like a
paradox, this word is used another way, being translated as “folly”, and it
depends upon the context to determine its rightful application.
When our confidence is in man, in self, it is folly indeed! But when the Lord is
the strength of our life, there is a firmness and stedfastness, which abides.
The Psalmist declared of the fool and the brutish, “this their way is their
folly”. The confidence that they placed in themselves, in their riches, in the
fleeting things of natural life, is not a firmness and stoutness, it is FOLLY.
But when all of our hope, our confidence is placed upon the Lord, there is a
stability which carries us through many a stormy season.
Finding a firmness in the Lord, we need not be afraid of a sudden fear, nor of
the desolation of the wicked when it bursts upon them, for we shall be “Kept by
the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last
time,” (I Peter 1:5). Forsaking the folly of leaning on the flesh, we now would
maintain our confidence firmly in the Lord. Amen!
