FROM THE OLD INTO THE NEW
“In that He saith, A new covenant, He hath made the first old. Now that which
decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.” Hebrews 8:13
“If therefore any man be in Christ, He is a new creation; old things are passed
away; behold, all things are become new,” (II Corinthians 5:17). The word
“become” signifies a process, a transition. While we thrill to the “suddenly” of
God’s working (as in yesterdays meditation), when there bursts upon us the new
manifestations of His grace and victory, we are, also, aware of the fact that in
our being “transformed” into His very own image, it has been, and is a daily
inworking of His Spirit, with a relinquishing of the old, and embracing of the
new. The law, with its forms and ceremonies, symbols and rituals, must give way
to the new ministration of the Spirit.
The new, with its glory, shall come to the
fore,
Proclaiming the Kingdom is nigh at the door.
Yet, strange the confusion as some try to stay
Entwined with the old, though it’s passing away,
while some try to mix the old with the new,
To be torn by the strife, and the rending in two.
“No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece
that filleth it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse,” (Mark
2:21). The order of the new cannot be fitted into the economy of the age that is
now ending, “old things are passing away,” and to try and hold them together
with the insertion of the new only causes a greater strain, until the rent is
made worse. Thus, it is in “forgetting those things which are behind, and
reaching forth unto those things which are before”, (Phil. 3:13), that we are
able to make progress into the new.
For saviours shall come and His fullness
declare,
With beauty for ashes, and treasures most rare,
What ages have veiled as the old order reigned,
Shall burst into view at the time He ordained.
