SUFFICIENT FOR THE DAY

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” (Matthew 6:33-34)

That these days have there full quota of evil, no one will deny, for darkness lies heavy over the world as the cup of iniquity comes to the full. But the emphasis here is that for this day there is sufficient, and if this be true in the realm of negative-evil, then certainly it is also much more so in the realm of positive-good. “Where sin increased and abounded, grace has surpassed it and increased the more, and super abounded,” (Romans 5:20). God always has an “over and above” fullness to meet the need wherever evil is present so that the rampage of evil never gets beyond His control. Thus we read, “Surely the wrath of man shall praise Thee: the remainder of wrath shalt Thou restrain,” (Psalm 76:10).

It is too easy to fall into the snare of suffering for tomorrow, to worry over what tomorrow might bring forth, only to find that when the next day comes, the troubles aren’t even there, nor as severe as we thought they would be. We speak of the term “carefree childhood”, because as a child we had no worries concerning the morrow, we knew that whatever needs would arise our parents would make all the necessary arrangements for them in time. But as we grow to adulthood, we acquire the built-up of perplexities and worries which are all a part of this world’s system. We need to realize that our “Heavenly Father knoweth that we have need of all these things”. And we can cast all of our care upon Him, and He truly cares for us.

But the prerequisite remains, we must “seek first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness”. And when He fills our consciousness with His love and peace, we can relax and know that He will provide all that we need.

Sufficient unto the day,
Thy soul shall also be blest,
To conquer each trial and test,
The Spirit becoming thy rest,
The whole of thy pathway made light,
Dispelling the shades of night,
As God illumines thy way.
