MARCH 29
PRESENT TRUTH
“Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these
things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.”
II Peter 1:12
There are many precepts and principles, which we do well to remember, for they
are essential to our daily walk. Oftentimes caught up in the many duties and
pressures of the day we temporarily forget, and thus have to be reminded of
these things. This is the blessed encouragement, which we can give one to
another. But along with the “remembrance of these things,” Peter goes on to
admonish that we be established in “present truth".
The word “established” used here means: to set or make fast, to strengthen. We
need to be strengthened in today’s truth. Yesterday’s manna cannot take the
place of the meat we need for today, nor can we reach out and grasp that which
God has held in reserve for tomorrow. There are revelations to come, when the
time is ripe for them, but we cannot force the Spirit to reveal what the Father
had kept for that day. Even the prophets of old tried this without success.
“Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of God which was in them did
signify, when it testified before hand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory
that should follow.” (I Peter 1:11). They did come to the understanding that it
was not for themselves, but for others at a future time, that they did prophesy
these things, and they had to be content to just let them rest. Paul also was
given a glimpse of tomorrow’s glory, and declared himself to be ‘born out of due
time”. Therefore he had to run the course set before him, and wait for those
things yet to come.
But God has a truth for TODAY, a “present truth”. This word “present”, from the
Greek word that means TO BE ALONGSIDE. Truth will run alongside of us and be our
strength and sufficiency, as we will keep pace with it. His truth is marching
on, and to walk in the light for today, means assured victory for our tomorrows.
Lord, speak to my heart a word for today
That will hold me fast in the upward way.
