BELIEVE, AND ARE SURE
“Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou
hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and
are sure that Thou art that Christ, the Son of the
living God.” (John 6:68-69)
BELIEVE – to remain stedfast, to adhere to, to
trust. “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see
the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”
(Ps. 27:13). Believing is a present tense action
word, it involves our active participation of
continued trust in Him, so that we remain firmly
committed. Perhaps we have been far too “slow of
heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.”
(Luke 24:25).
And are SURE – the Greek word is actually “ginosko”
meaning to know by experience. Thus we need to have
that complete trust in the truth, and have an
experimental knowledge, that we might be sure. God
will not have His people unprepared, therefore He is
leading each one through experience after experience
that they might be thoroughly tested, until they
truly “KNOW IN WHOM THEY HAVE BELIEVED.”
Lord, we believe and know by experience that Thou
art the Christ. We followed you over these past
years, we heard you teach, we saw your works that
testified to you. Yes, but many others also
followed, heard, saw, why then did they go back? Ah,
“flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto you,
Peter, but our Father which is in heaven. Revealed
what? That Thou art the Christ, the Son of the
living God!
“Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with
you, and yet hast thou not known Me.” (John 14:8-9).
It is not enough to sing with those who sing, shout
with the shouters, prophesy with those who prophesy,
fast with those who fast, etc., but have we learned
to KNOW HIM in that experimental knowledge which
undergirds and supports us without wavering? Yes, we
believe and are sure that HE IS GOD, in total
control of all that comes our way, working the evil
into our good, that we might daily overcome, and be
found to His praise.
