HOPE FOR EVERY TREE
“For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and
that the tender branch thereof will not cease. – Through the scent of water it
will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.” (Job 14:7,9)
The cutting down simply bespeaks of death to the old realm, that there might be
a change, a sprouting up of the new. There is a new life that is forming within
us, it is HIS LIFE, age-abiding and glorious. It does not emerge as a full grown
expression in an instant, but it sprouts and grows. We “Grow in grace and in the
knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,” and as we grow the change takes
place by degree. There is hope for every tree, for though every individual shall
be cut down, face the death to the old nature, yet they all shall sprout again,
for “As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every
man in his own order…” (I Cor. 15:22-23). How this creation needs that SCENT OF
WATER – that living water of His life. And we rejoice to know that God is
preparing those vessels, through whom shall flow “Rivers of living water,” to
bring His life to a weary, dry, groaning creation. Then shall the desert blossom
as a rose.
“If a man die, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I
wait, till my change come. Thou shalt call, and I will answer Thee: Thou wilt
have a desire to the work of Thine hands.” (Job 14:115). It is HIS WORK, and He
has not forgotten one creature of His creations. He has a desire to the work of
His hands. Indeed, He has purposed “In His sovereign will that all human history
shall be consummated in Christ, that everything that exists in heaven or earth
shall find its perfection and fulfillment in Him.” (Eph. 1:10, Phillips)
There is hope, there is an expectation, not for the renewing or reviving of the
old tree, but of that NEW GROWTH, a new life that shall spring forth out of the
old stump. In his dream, forewarning him of his experience to come,
Nebuchadnezzar saw how one was told to “Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet
leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth.” (Dan.4:23). So also he was
restored, not just to a former glory, but to a full new life.
