ADVERSITIES WORKING FOR US
“For our light affliction, which is but for a
moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and
eternal weight of glory’ while we look not at the
things which are seen, but at the things which are
not seen: for the things which are seen are
temporal; but the things which are not seen are
eternal.” (2 Cor. 4:17-18)
Perhaps one of the most vital things to remember, in
all our afflictions and adversities, is that the
FIRST CAUSE of all that touches our life is God. We
read, 2 Chron. 15:6, “And nation was destroyed of
nation, and city of city, for God did vex them with
all adversity.”
It remains, “The light of the body is the eye:
therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body
also is full of light.” (Luke 11:34). We see God in
the good, we are joyful in the day of prosperity.
But how often when it comes to a time of trouble, we
turn our vision away from God, and begin to see, and
blame other sources for the cause of our distress.
This brings a duality of vision, no more a single
eye, and it also brings us darkness. He is our
Light! To turn our vision away from Him, is to open
ourselves up to the darkness of negativism.
Acknowledging the hand of God in all that comes our
way makes it easier to overcome the carnal desire to
“escape” out of all our difficulties. For sure,
escapism and overcoming are at the far opposite ends
of the spectrum, in fact, escapism is an enemy to
overcoming. It is in facing up to our days of
adversity, our times of affliction, holding steady
in our trust in the Lord, that works for our
spiritual development and maturity.
How blessed that all these adverse things can WORK
FOR US – used to produce and achieve positive
results out of negative conditions. That is God all
the way! But the qualification is two-fold: they
work for us while we are subjected to them, and only
while we keep our eyes on the Lord. The moment we
see only the temporal, the waves roaring, etc. they
start working against us, filling us with fear. But
to KEEP OUR EYES ON GOD only good can come out of
every troublesome circumstance.
