JUNE 19
WHY AM I THUS?
“And the children struggled
together within her; and she
said, If it be so, why am I
thus? And she went to
enquire of the Lord.” (Gen.
25:22)
Rebecca had been without
children and Isaac had
intreated the Lord for Her,
and she became with child.
The first problem was
solved, but this only made
way for a new situation, for
next we read that the
children struggled together
within her. If God answered
prayer, and now she would
bear children, why this next
plight? She knew there was
but one place to go for the
answer, and “she went to
enquire of the Lord.” No
doubt she was amazed to
learn that she was going to
give birth to twins, and
furthermore they represented
two nations, two manner of
people, distinct and
different in every aspect,
so that the struggle between
the two had already begun
while they were yet in her
womb.
How often are men prone to
ask, Why is it this way?
What is it all about? Why am
I thus, caught in such a
straightened way, and
confined by it all? Then we
do well to enquire OF THE
LORD, He knows both the
immediate situation, and
what is being birthed out of
our present trials and
process.
Paul wrote that “the flesh
lusteth against the Spirit,
and the Spirit against the
flesh: and these are
contrary the one to the
other.” (Gal. 5:17). Betimes
it surely seems there are
two natures warring within
us – one that desires the
flesh, the other desiring
spiritual life, and in the
midst of the warfare we ask:
Why am I thus? Then the
Spirit reveals the cause of
our inner disquietness, and
we submit to the workings of
His cross, so that only HIS
LIFE can be birthed and
manifested.
The Psalmist cried out, “Why
art thou cast down, O my
soul? And why art thou
disquieted within me?” (Ps.
42:5). WHY AM I THUS? And
then realized that the only
answer was – “hope thou in
God: for I shall yet praise
Him for the help of His
countenance.” Often we are
caught in perplexities we do
not understand, but there is
a place of refuge, to trust
in the Lord, to know that He
is our help, and in every
strange and unusual
circumstance He causes us to
daily overcome.
