JUNE 24
HE SAT ON THE WELL
“Now Jacob’s well was there.
Jesus therefore, being
wearied with his journey,
sat thus on the well: and it
was about the sixth hour.
There cometh a woman of
Samaria to draw water…”
(John 4:6-7)
In the ever increasing,
intensified dealings of God
with His people, we come to
this phrase, “Jesus…sat thus
on the well.” The word “on”
from the Greek word “epi”
meaning, “UPON.” This brings
us a very beautiful truth
for there comes a time when
Jesus will simply sit right
down on the top of our well.
Not at the well location,
nor by the well, buy upon
it, so that you cannot draw
out its water but that you
go through Him. But,
wonderful as this might be,
it is not the main reason
for His sitting upon our
well. The real reason is so
that we cannot draw out of
that well anymore, but from
Him receive that LIVING
WATER which springs up from
our innermost being.
At her own choosing this
woman of Samaria could come
and draw water. At her own
will, at her own time, she
could come to this well and
draw out its blessing. But
the significant fact of it
all is that though she
repeatedly came to draw
water here, it did not
change her life, nor give
her lasting satisfaction.
Religiously we have all had
our wells, with prescribed
methods for drawing out the
blessings – we sang and
shouted, clapped our hands,
took our “Jericho marches,”
wept and prayed, worked
harder in service for Him,
and felt blessed for our
efforts. Even though deep
within, our spirit continued
to cry out for reality. Then
comes the day when Jesus
comes and sits on our well.
It is time for a change – no
more our own efforts to draw
water, for HE would bring an
end even to our “religious
works,” that we might fill
our water of life in Him
alone. Yea, He becomes
within us a well of living
water that springs up into
more abundant life.
He sits on the well till the
old is no more,
And in us becomes the new,
The water of life which
shall freely flow,
His joy, peace, and love to
imbue.
